Refreshing Established Landscapes on the Mesa
Las Alturas ("The Heights") is an established residential area east of Las Cruces, with most homes built between the 1980s and early 2000s. Lots here are larger than in newer communities, and many properties have mature trees, aging shrubs, and irrigation systems that are long past their prime.
That history is an asset, not a problem. Mature shade trees, settled soil, and existing hardscape give us a head start. What Makes Las Alturas Landscapes Different
Las Alturas properties are 20 to 40 years old. That means mature trees, tired irrigation, and hardscape that has weathered decades of sun and monsoons. Here is how we approach renovation work in this area.
Deep Caliche Layer
Las Alturas sits on thick caliche hardpan. When we add new trees or shrubs, we trench through it and amend the backfill so roots can spread without hitting a wall of calcium carbonate.
Mature Overgrowth
Trees and shrubs planted 20 or 30 years ago are often overgrown, crowding walkways and blocking views. We selectively prune or remove what is past its prime and fill in with fresh plantings.
Aging Irrigation Systems
Many Las Alturas drip and sprinkler systems are original to the home. Brittle poly pipe, broken emitters, and no smart controller means wasted water. We replace full systems and add Wi-Fi controllers.
Retaining Wall Repair

How do you update mature landscaping without starting over?
We start with a walk-through to decide what stays and what goes. Healthy shade trees usually stay. Overgrown or dying shrubs get removed. Then we fill in with fresh native plants, new gravel or mulch, and updated irrigation. The result looks new without losing years of growth.
What does it cost to replace an old irrigation system?
A full drip system replacement on a typical Las Alturas lot (6,000 to 10,000 sq ft of landscaped area) runs $2,500 to $6,000. That includes new poly line, emitters, valves, and a smart Wi-Fi controller. We give free on-site estimates with exact pricing.
Can you remove and replace old retaining walls?
Yes. We demo the old wall, regrade the slope, add drainage behind the new wall, and rebuild with reinforced block or stone. Walls over four feet require a city permit, and we handle that paperwork for you.
What are the best shade trees for Las Alturas?
